Julia Wolfe’s poignant oratorio: 146 voices for 146 lives lost.
A fire broke out in the garment workshop and the seamstresses had no escape; 146 young women, most of them immigrants, perished helplessly in the flames. What was a newspaper report in New York in 1911 was transformed by Julia Wolfe in 2018 into a multimedia oratorio featuring a vast youth choir. A work that strikes straight to the heart: harrowing, moving and frighteningly relevant.

Fire in my mouth (Dutch premiere)
Before the concert, during the interval and afterwards, visit the ground-floor foyer to see work by students from the Willem de Kooning Academy. Sixty second-year Bachelor Animation students have created work inspired by the music and themes of the concert. Their animations will be projected onto large screens and the foyer’s existing sheer curtains, allowing you to become fully immersed in the animation.
