The orchestra
The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1918. After Eduard Flipse became chief conductor in 1930, it developed into one of the leading Dutch orchestras. The orchestra enhanced its international reputation in the 1970s under Jean Fournet and Edo de Waart. The appointment of Valery Gergiev heralded a new golden age that continued under Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who took over in 2008. Yannick has been the orchestra’s honorary conductor since 2018. Lahav Shani has wielded the baton as chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra since the 2018-2019 season.
