After the Revolution, Russia experienced a musical brain drain. Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Prokofiev—the greatest composers left the country. The Russian premiere of The Love for Three Oranges only served as a painful reminder of this loss. Then, in May 1926—exactly a century ago—a 19-year-old Shostakovich made his debut with his brilliant First Symphony. A wave of relief followed: the future of Russian music was saved.
