Ervaar de passie en elegantie van de Argentijnse tango. De ervaren docenten van Tangoschool Cuartito Azul nemen je mee in een toegankelijke dansles, waar iedereen – van beginner tot gevorderde – de magie van deze dans kan ontdekken.
De muziek vult de ruimte en voert je mee naar het zuidelijk halfrond, waar de warmte en hartstocht van de tango bijna tastbaar worden. Laat je meeslepen en beleef de intensiteit van deze tijdloze dans!
<h4>Parfum maken met Forêt Atelier</h4>
Ruik de Herfst

In de workshop ‘Herfstparfum’ ga je je eigen parfum maken, geïnspireerd door Europese landschappen. Je leert over het gebruik van geurende planten, bomen en natuurlijke materialen, met focus op naaldbomen zoals sparren, dennen en jeneverbes. Onder begeleiding van Maidie van de Bos van Forêt Atelier ontdek je het proces van destillatie en het maken van tincturen. Je gaat naar huis met een klein flesje van je zelfgemaakte, 100% natuurlijke eau de parfum.

In de Victoriaanse tijd was het communiceren met bloemen razend populair, vooral in Engeland. Openlijk flirten of gevoelens uitspreken was toen niet gepast, maar met bloemen kon je alles zeggen – van liefde en bewondering tot verlangen en vriendschap.
Met de kleurrijke, seizoensgebonden bloemen van biologische lokale telers creëer je een boeket dat niet alleen prachtig oogt, maar ook een diepere betekenis draagt. Laat je inspireren en vertel jouw verhaal met bloemen!

Ik vond de aankleding in de hal erg geslaagd, de stoeltjes en de  lichtjes. Het was net alsof je op een terras in Zuid Frankrijk zat.

Zo'n 3.000 betrokken Vrienden zetten zich in voor het temperamentvolle en avontuurlijke Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest.

Hoe is de cello op je pad gekomen? 
Ik heb eerst piano gespeeld, maar dat bleek gewoon te moeilijk. Ik heb te kleine handen. Dus op mijn veertiende koos ik cello. Cello was makkelijker, daarom.
Was er een bepaald moment dat je wist dat je musicus wilde worden? 
Ja, toen ik op de universiteit zat. Ik studeerde schoolmuziek, dus ik moest op een basisschool of op gymnasium muziekles gaan geven. Dat vond ik vreselijk. Toen besloot ik dat ik orkestmusicus wilde zijn, als ik dat kon.
Hoe studeer je een muziekstuk in? 
Eerst kijk ik wat het tempo is, dan begin ik met langzaam instuderen. Als dat niet gaat: luisteren! Dat helpt heel veel: luisteren of kijken op YouTube.
Welke les heeft in jouw muzikale leven de meeste indruk op je gemaakt? 
Ik ben een paar jaar geleden bij een mentale trainer geweest. Ze is zelf geen cellist, ze was hoornist en ze heeft me getraind voor audities. Ik heb veel van haar geleerd. Het gaat niet om perfectie, maar om het moment. Je moet in het moment leven, dat blijft tot vandaag de dag bij me. Als er iets misgaat, of ik heb negatieve gedachten: gewoon laten gaan. Dat mag gebeuren. Fouten mogen gebeuren. Dat heb ik geleerd van haar.
Wat maakt een dag voor jou een goede dag? 
Als ik iets bijzonders of lekkers heb gegeten. Of een glimlach van iemand. Of mooi uitzicht en lekker hardlopen. Dat maakt al een goede dag.

Duke Bluebeard’s Castle

No musical piece leaves the listener with more questions than answers like this opera by the Hungarian genius Béla Bartók. Duke Bluebeard’s Castle is a peculiar musical piece. Contrary to other operas, its plot is not an ordinary love story and scenery – we won't see a dramatic romance on stage. &nbsp;Instead, Bartók gave us this musical thriller. 
The story has its roots in a French fairy tale with the same name by Charles Perrault. In the 20th century, the classic tale was the subject of new interpretations. Under the influence of symbolism, subconsciousness, and the emergence of the field of psychology, it was reinterpreted with a new mysterious and dark meaning. A foundation for Bartok’s opera came out of the pen of Hungarian librettist and poet Béla Balázs, a close friend of the composer.&nbsp;
<h3>What is Duke Bluebeard’s Castle about?</h3>
All attention of the opera is drawn to the two main characters, Bluebeard and his new 'wife’ Judith. Even though the opera's libretto doesn't state the marital status of Bluebeard and Judith, there are many connotations and theories stating it. What is quite apparent - the rumours around the mysterious Duke: what has happened to his previous wives? Are they still alive? Despite evil rumours, Judith decides to leave her family and stay by Bluebeard's side. &nbsp; 
Deprived of the company of servants and other inhabitants of a fairy-tale land, a young Judith starts a new life with a mysterious duke in his distant castle. The Bluebeard's castle stands at the centre of the plot as it is the only setting for this opera. Like the relationship of the main characters, it has a symbolic meaning, which gradually reveals its cherished awe-inspiring and terrifying secrets to the listener.&nbsp;
<h3>What does it sound like?</h3>
The opera is built in the form of a psychologically expressive dialogue; it is abundant with fluid, intensely expressive recitatives, which skilfully translate the characteristic manner of Hungarian musical folk motifs. Bartók’s vibrant music sparkles with subtle nuances, woven from a variety of original, sometimes daring in innovation, expressive techniques. With the help of these techniques, the composer skilfully writes out a mysterious, gloomy-fantastic, picturesque background against which the opera's actions unfold. With each new scene uneasiness in the air is only building up, the colours thicken and darken on the stage. In the dramatic climax of the opera, the orchestra sounds especially powerful and gloomy. A true musical thriller for your ears that must be heard live!&nbsp;

Hoe is de viool op je pad gekomen? 
Bij mijn ouders was altijd muziek in huis. Ze speelden ook allebei. Dus toen ik drie was, zei ik blijkbaar al dat ik viool wilde spelen. Ik moest van mijn ouders nog even wachten tot ik zes was, maar zo ben ik begonnen met viool spelen. 
Wat is er zo mooi aan jouw instrument?&nbsp; 
De klank die je kunt maken en de mogelijkheden die je erop hebt. Wat ik ook heel interessant vind is dat het echt een solo-instrument kan zijn, maar dat je ook in de groep zoveel kan toevoegen. Of in verschillende stemmen met elkaar kunt spelen. Dat vind ik fijn aan de viool.
Hoe ziet je studeerruimte eruit? 
Ik heb een geluiddempende studiecabine in één van mijn slaapkamers staat – niet in de kamer waar ik slaap. Ik studeer ook wel eens buiten de cabine, maar ik vind het heel fijn aan de cabine dat ik weet dat ik mijn buren niet tot last ben en dat ik desnoods dag en nacht daarin terecht kan. Als het 's nachts moet, dan kan dat ook. Dan heeft niemand er last van.
Van welke niet-klassieke muziek houd je?&nbsp; 
Ik hou van enorm veel soorten muziek. Ik hou heel erg van popmuziek. Als ik naar klassiek luister, ga ik er ook beroepsmatig naar luisteren. Dus als ik gewoon een gezellig avondje heb of niet wil nadenken, zet ik juist geen klassieke muziek op, maar jazz of pop. Dat vind ik veel fijner om even te ontspannen, om passief naar te luisteren.
Welke les heeft in jouw muzikale leven het meeste indruk op je gemaakt?&nbsp; 
Ik was vaak heel zenuwachtig voor audities. Ik had het gevoel daar te worden veroordeeld in plaats van alleen beoordeeld. Tot iemand me een interview met een hele bekende zangeres doorstuurde. Zij zei: als ik in een jury zit, wil ik dat iemand heel goed speelt. Dus dat iemand het goed doet, en niet dat iemand fouten maakt. Dat heeft mij heel erg geholpen: je moet ervan uitgaan dat een jury het liefst hebben dat iemand goed speelt. Dat vond ik heel interessant en dat probeer ik nu altijd mee te nemen.
Wat is écht kenmerkend voor het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest? 
Het doorzetten en er echt voor gaan met z'n allen. De kracht van het orkest met de niet-zeuren-maar-gewoon-doen-en-doorgaanmentaliteit. Met z'n allen knallen.

How did percussion come your way? 
I started playing the piano, but I always wanted to drum. When I was six years old, I joined the drum band at the music school in Woerden and never really stopped.
Do you come from a musical family yourself? 
Of course. My parents both play music. My mother also plays in the orchestra here, she plays the oboe. So poured in with the young spoon.
Do you have a practice room at home? 
No, I don’t have any practice space at home. Because I play as a percussionist in the orchestra, I have to study in de Doelen. We have two rooms there where we can study, so I don't have to do anything at home. And I come to de Doelen to study.
Have you been studying less over the years? For example, because you have started to learn more efficiently. 
I do study in a different way then when I was at the conservatory, for example. I don't have to play so many solo pieces anymore, so I can focus more on the technical aspects. Keeping that on track now has more focus than rehearsing difficult solo works.
How old were you when you knew you wanted to become a percussionist instead of say, an office job? 
I think when I was about eleven or twelve years old I knew I really wanted to be in music. Then I also went to a high school for music and dance and it was confirmed there.
How do you rehearse a piece of music? 
As percussion, we always have to look at a division first. Who plays which instrument? And especially with modern music, there are a lot of instruments that are needed. That's the first puzzle. In addition, you will look at what the difficult parts of this piece are and what is actually not too bad. Then you start studying the difficult pieces and if you have them, the rest is usually not too bad. That will go well.

<h3>Wat maakt de Matthäus-Passion zo bijzonder?&nbsp;</h3>
We vroegen drie van onze musici naar hun beleving van de Matthäus-Passion: <a href="https://www.rotterdamsphilharmonisch.nl/het-orkest/onze-musici/galerij/frank-de-groot?section=2nd_violins">Frank de Groot</a> (viool), <a href="https://www.rotterdamsphilharmonisch.nl/het-orkest/onze-musici/galerij/juliette-hurel?section=winds">Juliette Hurel</a> (fluit) en <a href="https://www.rotterdamsphilharmonisch.nl/het-orkest/onze-musici/galerij/arjen-leendertz?section=doublebasses">Arjen Leendertz</a> (contrabas).
Frank Groot, plaatsvervangend aanvoerder tweede violen, speelt al sinds 1984 de Matthäus-Passion. Hij vertelt: ‘Ik vind de Matthäus-Passion het mooist als het accent op de zeggingskracht van de tekst ligt. Je hoort het meteen als de dirigent niet goed weet waar het over gaat. Bach ondersteunt de tekst met z’n harmonische grilligheden en wendingen. Als Judas‘ verraad pleegt, zet hij een lelijk akkoord neer. Als er veel verdriet is, hoor je de tranen in de violen.’
Juliette Hurel is solofluitiste en sinds 1998 bij het orkest. Ze speelde de Matthäus-Passion meer dan tien keer. ‘De eerste keer dat ik de Matthäus-Passion hoorde vond ik het zó jammer dat ik geen Duits verstond. Ik heb meteen de tekst met de Franse vertaling ernaast geprint, zodat ik de tekst kon volgen. Ik ben katholiek opgevoed, maar ben niet religieus. Een keer per jaar geloof ik in God en dat is tijdens de Matthäus-Passion. Ik vind het zo mooi!’
Arjen Leendertz, contrabassist bij het Rotterdams Philharmonisch orkest en liefhebben van de Matthäus. ‘De opening vind ik het mooiste. Hij is gelaagd en geeft richting en vaart. Het is alsof je in de trein zit en steeds nieuwe panorama’s krijgt voorgeschoteld. Daar wordt iedereen door gepakt. Bij Bach klopt alles gewoon, zijn composities zijn zo logisch als natuurkunde. Als ik midden in zo’n aria zit, kom ik dicht bij mijn oerkracht, zo voelt dat.’
<h3>Wat is de geschiedenis van de Matthäus-Passion?</h3>

<li>1870: eerste uitvoering in Nederland door Toonkunst Rotterdam o.l.v. <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woldemar_Bargiel" target="_blank">Woldemar Bargiel</a></li>
<li>1899: eerste uitvoering door Concertgebouworkest o.l.v. <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willem_Mengelberg_(dirigent)" target="_blank">Willem Mengelberg</a>, begin van jaarlijkse traditie op diverse plekken in Nederland</li>
<li>1921: oprichting <a href="https://www.bachvereniging.nl" target="_blank">Nederlandse Bachvereniging</a> die de Matthäus-Passion vanaf 1922 in veel kleinere bezetting in <a href="https://grotekerknaarden.nl" target="_blank">de kerk van Naarden</a> uitvoert.</li>
<li>1945: uitvoering op 4, 5 en 10 mei om de bezetting te herdenken door Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, daarna vrijwel jaarlijks op het programma in de Goede Week.</li>
</ul>

<h4>1st violins</h4>
Violins have an extensive range: they can play both low and high notes. However, it is in the higher register where the first violins truly shine. They are the soaring birds of the orchestra, reaching heights where you may only occasionally encounter a lonely piccolo. Frequently, the first violins also take on the most significant melodies in a piece of music. Not because they are superior to their colleagues, but because melodies typically sound best when the accompanying voices are lower – that's simply how our auditory perception works.
Why does the First Violin section of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra produce such beautiful sound? Undoubtedly, it is due to the presence of highly skilled musicians, but that holds true for the other sections as well. In addition to the musicians' talent, the quality of their instruments also plays a part. One of our concertmasters plays a Stradivarius; other violins in the group were crafted by renowned makers such as Camillo Camilli, Ferdinand Gagliano, and Jean Baptiste Vuillaume. These instruments have been made available to us by the Erasmus Foundation, the National Music Instrument Fund, the Friends Association of the orchestra, and generous private benefactors.

How did the violin come into your life? 
When I was three years old, I already wanted to play the violin. There was always music in our house, and both of my parents played instruments. As a child, I wanted to play the violin. When I was three, I apparently said that I wanted to play the violin. However, my parents told me to wait until I was six, and if I still wanted to play then, I could start. That's how I started playing the violin.
What do you love about your instrument? 
I love the sound it can produce and the possibilities it offers. I also find it very interesting that it can be a solo instrument, but you can also add so much to a group or play in different voices together. That's what I love about the violin.
What does your study space at home look like? 
I have a soundproof study cabin in one of my bedrooms, the one where I don't sleep. That's where I study. I also study outside the cabin, but I like the cabin because I know that I'm not bothering my neighbors, and I can use it day and night if I need to. If I have to practice at night, I can do so without bothering anyone.
What's your favorite music besides classical music? 
I really love many types of music, and I really like pop music. I never listen to classical music in the car. If I listen to classical music, I really listen and analyze it professionally. So for me, it's better to listen to jazz or pop music if I just want to relax or don't want to think too much. I enjoy listening passively.
Which lesson has made the biggest impression on your musical life? 
When I used to audition, I was would get very stressed and nervous. I always thought that I was being judged instead of just being evaluated. Someone once gave me an interview with a famous singer, and she said that when she's on the jury, she wants someone to play well. She wants someone to do well rather than make mistakes. That really helped me a lot. She said that you should assume that when you're in front of the jury, they want you to play well. I found that very interesting, and I always try to remember that now.
What is distinctive about the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra? 
The perseverance and the ‘no whining’ attitude. Everyone goes for it together. The orchestra's strength lies in the mentality of just doing it and moving forward together.

Het muzikale palet is zeer helder en zit vol sterke, gedenkwaardige deuntjes. Tsjaikovski probeerde de muziek voor De Notenkraker expressief en subtiel te maken. In gedachten dans je op de betoverende deuntjes van de bekende Bloemenwals en voel je de magie tijdens het dramatische hoogtepunt van de Dans van de Suikerfee.
