Anders als die Andern
A theatrical concert by queer conductor Manoj Kamps together with drag queen Ma’MaQueen and tenor Freddie Ballentine.
Berlin, 1924. In the heart of the Weimar Republic, there is a largely safe haven for what we now call the LGBTQ+ community. Dozens of bars and clubs form a sanctuary for all variations in gender and sexuality. Taboo-breaking cabaret flourishes, until the rise of Nazism puts a violent end to it.
A hundred years later, the queer utopia is unfortunately still a pipe dream. To keep the vision alive, we are reviving the Berlin queer scene of that time in stories, songs and orchestral music: a celebration of what was, a commemoration of the people and places that have been erased, a dream image of what we continue to fight for today.
Well-known club songs from the vibrant 1920s — in new dazzling arrangements — form the centerpiece of this concert, which unfolds as a Drag Queen Story Hour hosted by the one and only Ma'MaQueen.
