Oboe

In my garden studio, I can just do as I please day and night, without anyone bothering me. Perfect.

Why the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra?

I played for a short time in the Brabant Orchestra as a substitute first and second oboe. I really enjoyed that. However, I auditioned further for the Residentie Orchestra, a better orchestra, also as second oboe. My teacher Bart Snijman played here in Rotterdam. After thinking about it for a long time, I knew I wanted to play with him. Same style of playing and, in my opinion, an even better orchestra. I just went for it, and everything worked out.

How does your practice space look like?

In Pijnacker, where I lived for 25 years, we had an attic that was actually detached from the neighbors. That was great because we lived in a row house. For about four years now, I have been living in Rhoon and have a studio in the garden. And it's wonderful. I can just do as I please day and night, without anyone bothering me. Perfect.

What do you do to sustain your life as a professional musician physically and mentally?

Sports are really a must for me. Being outdoors, going for walks. I always feel it in my body: if I've had many concerts or heavy rehearsals, I need to let off some steam. I enjoy running. I also play padel, which I love. I need to do those kinds of things.

Is there something you had to give up for your life in music?

The social life can be difficult sometimes. It's challenging to organize things because we often work in the evenings and on weekends. Additionally, it's a profession where you can't just leave everything behind. You're always mentally occupied with the upcoming week: I have a concert tomorrow evening, I need to make sure I'm fit. It's definitely a demanding profession.
