<h2>Wie is Fazil Say?</h2>
Beleef in 2025 een muzikaal hoogtepunt wanneer de wereldberoemde pianist <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fazıl_Say" target="_blank">Fazil Say</a> zijn opwachting maakt met een bijzonder concert. Deze Turkse meesterpianist staat bekend om zijn uitzonderlijke virtuositeit, persoonlijke interpretaties en onmiskenbare charisma. Zijn optredens zijn niet zomaar concerten, maar diep doorleefde muzikale ervaringen waarin emotie en vakmanschap samenkomen.
Geboren in Ankara in 1970, ontwikkelde Say zich al op jonge leeftijd tot een muzikaal wonderkind. Zijn studie aan onder andere het Robert Schumann Instituut in Düsseldorf vormde de basis voor een indrukwekkende internationale carrière. Sinds zijn doorbraak in de jaren '90 is hij een graag geziene gast op de grootste podia ter wereld, waar hij zowel klassiek repertoire als eigen composities uitvoert. Zijn muziek is een unieke samensmelting van oosterse en westerse invloeden.
Wie Fazil Say in 2025 live hoort spelen, mag zich verheugen op een avond waarin bekende meesterwerken en verrassende nieuwe klanken elkaar afwisselen. Zijn recente opname van Bachs Goldbergvariaties toont opnieuw zijn vermogen om klassieke werken te benaderen met verfrissende diepgang en poëtische kracht. Of hij nu een subtiele Chopin speelt of een energiek eigen werk, Say weet altijd te raken.

How did you become a conductor? 
My father is a conductor. I have been familiar with the musical world from an early age. I started making music when I was very young. First as a pianist, then I learned to play the double bass. Finally, I became a conductor, but when I was young, I didn’t know yet. Becoming a conductor, a pianist, an orchestra musician, a composer, or an arranger: everything seemed possible to me. I was happy with each one of these options. But it was always clear to me that I would be a musician. There was never really a question about it for me.
What makes conducting special to you? 
I especially enjoy making music with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, because as a conductor to have such a great relationship with an orchestra is quite a privilege. You can really take all the repertoire; all the best music ever written and perform it as well as you can for the public and be inspired by the musicians you work with on stage.
Can it sometimes also be stressful to be a conductor? 
I have to say, I consider myself very privileged that the thing I love most, which is making music, is also my profession. I am so happy to do this every day. Of course, there is stress involved. Especially learning new repertoire, rehearsing, meeting new orchestras, meeting a lot of different people all the time. But the moment of making music, the concert itself, is never stressful. It’s a moment of liberation, a moment of sharing beauty with other people, sharing emotions with other people. It's something so unique that I am absolutely privileged to do this so often.
Is there anything you had to give up for your life in music? 
The only thing you sacrifice is your free time, and I am someone who really enjoys his free time. I consider it very precious. So, the more you work, the less free time you have. On the other hand, if you have a lot of free time and very little work, very little music making, it’s not great. So, it’s about finding a good balance and that’s a never-ending story. From time to time it’s very good to be away and miss the stage, it’s good to miss the people you work with. Then when you come back it’s really about love.
What’s typical for the Rotterdam Philharmonic? 
They are an eager, curious, and open-minded orchestra. Already in the first rehearsal the musicians are prepared as if that concert is today. But that’s just a starting point for them. Even if they know a piece of music very well, they’re still always open for new ideas, for new conceptions. And during the concert they can really let everything go and be spontaneous. Just let the moment happen and let the music take over. That is really exceptional.
What makes a great, unique concert? 
In a really great concert, you don’t think about anything. You don’t think about details. You don’t think about who you are and what you are doing right now. You are just in a state of flow from beginning to end. And you don’t feel time at all. You are absolutely in the music, and you let things happen. It feels like things happen by themselves. You don’t feel like you are controlling everything. You don’t feel like you are dictating anything. But this really requires a very special chemistry between a conductor and an orchestra. And a lot of trust between the conductor and the orchestra.
